APPLICATIONS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY
Medicine is used to deliver drugs, heat, light and other substances to certain types of cells. The nanoparticles are attracted to diseased cells. This allows treatment to take place and reduce damage to healthy cells. Nanotechnology in medicine can provide support in an event of impaired circulation by forming an "artificial red blood cell" which will improve the oxygen that is already available to the patient. Another way nanotechnology is used in medicine is in the flesh welder. This is when nano-shells are dribbled along a seam of skin. An infrared laser is then traced along the seam, causing the two sides to weld together. This can solve issues such as blood leaks during surgery.
Nanotechnology will make it possible to do molecular scale surgery to replace defective cells, repair and rearrange cells.
Sports attire is made with nanoparticles which create a shoe that will weigh less. The particles are light weight and increase strength. Although they are fairly thin, they will protect a player from a kick in the shin. The nanopatricle material are being used today in squash and badminton racquets,baseball bats, hockey sticks, snowboards, skis, fishing rods and poles, golf balls, and golf clubs.
The field of Textiles puts nanotechnology to use in their consumer products. Nanoparticles are used to make products such as stain-resistant and anti-wrinkle sprays. One example of a recent application to textiles is in the shark-skin suit worn by Michael Phelps. It was designed to help the swimmer glide through water due to a plasma layer enhanced by nanotechnology to repel water molecule.
The Food industry has incorporated the use of nanotechnology into their packaging. Bottles are commonly made with nano-composites that can minimize leakage of carbon dioxide, which increases its shelf life. In food storage bins, nanoparticles are embedded in the plastic which can kill bacteria from any food previously stored in the bins. There are also many products currently under development. One of these is the nanosensor which is in plastic packaging. The nanosensor can detect gases given off by food when it spoils. The package performs this by changing color to alert you that the food has gone bad. This sensor is even able to detect salmonella.
